On a day woven with legacy and light, President Leslie Ryan and Immediate Past President Beverly Hendrickson stood as ceremonial stewards of history, accepting the official Proclamation and 100-Year Certificate on behalf of the Punta Gorda Woman’s Club.
With grace befitting the occasion, Leslie and Beverly received the honor not merely as club leaders, but as torchbearers of a century-long commitment of service, empowerment, and civic devotion. Their presence at the proclamation ceremony symbolized the continuum of leadership—from the visionary women who founded the club in 1925 to the vibrant members who carry its mission forward today.
As the proclamation was read aloud, affirming September 17, 2025 as the club’s centennial milestone, Leslie and Beverly accepted the certificate with heartfelt reverence. Their expressions reflected the depth of commitment, the joy of legacy, and the quiet power of women united in purpose.
As Leslie and Beverly received the centennial proclamation, their hands became vessels of continuity—bridging the club’s storied past with its unfolding future. The certificate, rich with historical weight, was more than parchment; it was a symbolic heirloom, affirming the Punta Gorda Woman’s Club as a living archive of civic grace and feminine resolve. In their shared presence, one could sense the rhythm of legacy—each gesture echoing the care, creativity, and commitment that have defined the club’s century-long journey. This was not a conclusion, but a consecration: a quiet vow to tend the next hundred years with the same devotion that shaped the first.

As we prepare to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the GFWC Punta Gorda Woman’s Club, we pause to honor the women whose hands, hearts, and voices have shaped this sanctuary of civic grace. From the founding members in 1925 to today’s vibrant stewards, each woman has carried the torch of service with dignity, creativity, and unwavering care.
The Charlotte County Proclamation Certificate is more than a document—it is a mirror reflecting generations of women who:
Their legacy is not just written in minutes or bylaws—it blooms in every child who reads, every neighbor who feels seen, and every corner of Punta Gorda touched by their generosity.

Three clubs that were active in Punta Gorda in the early part of the twentieth century merged in 1925 to form the Federated Woman's Club of Punta Gorda (1925): the Fortnightly Literary Society (1896), the Married Ladies Social Club, and the Women's Civic Improvement Association (1911). The latter had undertaken such projects as building the Bath House. Because members of the Married Ladies Club were required to wear hats and gloves as they engaged in polite conversation at meetings, they were called the "tea drinkers." The Fortnightly Club was literary and studied Robert Browning and William Shakespeare.
History has shown that these dedicated and concerned groups have established local libraries such as Punta Gorda Library, garden clubs, scout troops, city parks, humane societies, hospital auxiliaries and much more.
Through the years, our Club building on Sullivan Street has been the place for various civic, religious, and political groups. In 1976, the Charlotte County Historical Society presented the club with a marker. In April 1991, the club building, with the help of our members, was placed on the National Registry of Historic Places. Since 2000 the Punta Gorda Historical Society is responsible for the building.
MILESTONE!
On September 9, County commissioners will sign a proclamation stating that September 17th, 2025, is the 100th ANNIVERSARY of our Club. Happy 100th Birthday to the Punta Gorda Woman’s Club!
