Since January 2025 a group of 4 to 10 have been walking from the Woman's Club building Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9-10 AM except on meeting days. Walking will stop during summer months because our club doesn't meet after the May 2 meeting until October. Blue Zone walking will resume in October after our first Friday meeting. Members are encouraged to keep up exercising over the summer break.
The Blue Zones Project is a community well-being initiative inspired by the world's "Blue Zones," which are regions where people live significantly longer and healthier lives. These areas include Okinawa (Japan), Sardinia (Italy), Nicoya (Costa Rica), Ikaria (Greece), and Loma Linda (California). The project applies evidence-based practices from these regions to transform communities by improving environments, policies, and social networks.
The Blue Zones Project continues to make incredible strides in shaping communities that support healthier lifestyles by optimizing public spaces, schools, workplaces, and food systems. By integrating principles like the "Power 9," which emphasize staying active, eating plant-based diets, and fostering strong social connections, participating communities have seen remarkable benefits—including reduced obesity rates, lower healthcare costs, and overall improved well-being.
A great example of these principles in action is our thriving walking group. With a consistent rise in participation, walkers are joining each session, bringing their energy and enthusiasm to support a shared commitment to health and well-being. Whether new members embracing movement for the first time or seasoned walkers who inspire others with their consistency, the group is fostering a vibrant and supportive atmosphere that aligns perfectly with the Blue Zones philosophy.
As we continue walking together, we’re not just logging miles—we’re strengthening connections, prioritizing well-being, and creating a lasting impact on our community. If you haven’t joined us yet, now is the perfect time!
The "Power 9" refers to nine lifestyle habits identified in Blue Zones—regions where people live the longest and healthiest lives. These habits are:
These principles are simple yet powerful ways to promote longevity and well-being.
